Sea doo has long been known for being the fastest and most competitive jet skis on the water. Sea doo was not scared to go to fast when other manufacturers were. They used high horsepower rotax engines and efficient pumps for excellent acceleration and top speed. The two stroke rotax engines also had the ability to produce much more power than they did stock. Sea doo hulls were very well designed and recieved excellent feedback from the racing community. Models such as the xp, gsx, and gtx have sold many models due to there good qualities of performance and reliability. The xp has won races repeadiately for years and was the benchmark for speed and performance through the 1990′s and yet today. Sea doo has also dared at making special models such as the hx which was a direct attack at the very successful yamaha blaster. The hx made more power and was an excellent ride with a first ever shock absorber for the seat. The high performance continues today as sea-doo continues to push the envelope of performance and engineering.

Jet Ski troubleshooting

Jet-ski troubleshooting can be broken down into a few groups. If the ski will not start or run at all, the ignition should be the first place to start. The carburetion or fuel system could also cause this problem if it hasn’t run in awhile. A spark plug check is a good place to start for either problem. Remove the spark plugs and look at them to see if they are wet or dry. If they are dry and light brown color the fueling is correct. If one plug is wet, either that carb has a problem or the ignition on that cylinder isn’t working. Use the starter and spin the engine over with the spark plugs in the plug boots. Lay the plugs on a unpainted metal part of the engine. As the engine spins the plug should be sparking. If the spark looks weak or both plugs are wet and black the plugs may need to be replaced. NGK spark plugs should be used because they work very well for two stroke engines. If one spark plug isn’t sparking the ignition coil may be bad. Refer to the ignition coil story to learn how to check a coil. If both plugs are good but are still wet you may have a carburetion problem.

Jet ski aftermarket pipes

Aftermarket pipes will significantly improve a jet ski’s performance, especially two stroke versions. As with other two stroke engines the exhaust system can be the easiest way to gain a good amount of power. Whenever possible look for dyno graphs to decide which pipe that you will want. Compare this pipe to others, and don’t look only for the highest horsepower number that you can find. Many times the highest horsepower pipe has lost all of it’s low end torque, which can reduce acceleration significantly. Instead look for a pipe that keeps the torque or power comparable in the mid-range, yet has better top end power.

A two stroke engine is not difficult to tune. As with four stroke engine you should first check your carburetors. First let the vehicle warm up and while sitting at idle slowly twist the throttle increasing the rpm’s. Come back to idle and repeat the process a little faster each time. If you are having problems with your carbs it should eventually act up. Sometimes you have to operate it and try the accelerating to put some load on the vehicle. Eventually it should become unresponsive with a slow flat “buuuwwwaaa” sound and then take off. This would be a caused by a lean condition and needs more fuel. If the vehicle stumbles, burbles and stutters when you gas the throttle it is rich and needs less fuel. Always be careful when tuning a two stroke engine to make sure it doesn’t operate in a lean condition or damage can occur to the under lubricated engine. Although this is not the best method for checking carbs, it may help you out. You can check the spark plugs by instantly stopping the motor during the experienced poor running. Remove the spark plugs. First check to see that the plugs look the same on the electrode. If one plug is completely different than the other, check for air leaks or one carburetor not working correctly.

The 2 stroke engine has always had a problem with hydrocarbon (unburnt gas) emissions. The amount of overlap, the time when the intake and exhaust are both open, can not be controlled as well as a 4 stroke can with it’s valves. This is the same problem that has plagued the rotary engine until recently, when a new port configuration was used on them. Unfortunately another problem with two strokes is that most people want to build them up and make more horsepower. Normally a tuned exhaust is one of the first modifications done, due to a large increase in power for a reasonable amount of money. The purpose of an expansion chamber is to reflect a pressure wave back to the cylinder. If timed correctly in a certain rpm range, this strong pulse will be reflected away from the cylinder which creates a vacuum at the cylinder. The overlap period takes atvantage of this situation as the fresh intake air rushes into the cylinder. As the air fuel mixture fills the cylinder it does a great job of increasing the volume which translates to power.
