 This is a 1991 Ford Mustang with a 2.3 liter four cylinder engine. The automatic transmission is slipping when it’s shifting to higher gears. The first thing to check for is a leaking line which could suck air. The next thing to do when your transmission is slipping is to remove the transmission pan. When the pan is removed a couple things can be done. First the arrow points to the magnet that will pick up some of the worn material. There should be a minimal amount of material on it, if not there may be larger problems. Also this is the time to replace the transmission filter which may cause slipping also. This transmission needs to be rebuilt as it has worn clutches that need to be replaced. Most automatic transmissions are built very similar.

Change Transmission Filter

 If your car revs up when it shifts or when the gas is stepped on, the transmission filter may need to be replaced. This generally happens by the time a vehicle has reached 100,000 miles. The transmission filter should actually be replaced every 60,000 miles. Always check the transmission fluid level first, since this can cause the same problems. Almost all automatic transmission filters are the same to replace, this transmission is from a 1991 mustang. The bolts shown, run all the way around the transmission pan and will all need to be removed. Place a catch pan underneath the trans pan so it can catch the fluid that it will leak out.

TCC, torque converter clutch, lockup converter

Although the torque converter clutch is not part of the engine, it can make the car feel like the engine has a problem. The torque converter clutch is also known as a lock up converter. The lockup clutch has many purposes and is part of the transmission. A regular converter in an automatic transmission is made to slip at idle so that the car doesn’t move. As the accelerator is pressed the RPM’s raise and the torque converter will start to lockup or engage. When the converter engages the car will move. Even though the torque converter is engaged it never completely engages the way a manual transmission car clutch will. It will always slip a little, which is not very efficient. This is why a manual transmission car gets better gas mileage and has more power than an automatic transmission car. To increase power and mainly fuel mileage, a TCC is added to an automatic transmission. The torque converter clutch is an electronic clutch that will engage the engine and drivetrain 100 percent.
