If your car revs up when it shifts or when the gas is stepped on, the transmission filter may need to be replaced. This generally happens by the time a vehicle has reached 100,000 miles. The transmission filter should actually be replaced every 60,000 miles. Always check the transmission fluid level first, since this can cause the same problems. Almost all automatic transmission filters are the same to replace, this transmission is from a 1991 mustang. The bolts shown, run all the way around the transmission pan and will all need to be removed. Place a catch pan underneath the trans pan so it can catch the fluid that it will leak out.
If your fuel pump is not working there is a possibility that your fuel pump relay is bad. When you turn the ignition key forward the coil inside the relay is energized. When the coil is energized you can generally quietly hear the fuel pump buzzing for a few seconds. The fuel pump will come on before the engine has a chance to start up so that the fuel system will be pre pressurized. If the relay has gone bad the fuel pump will never come on. If you don’t hear the fuel pump turn on, look under the hood, probably inside the fuse panel to locate the relay. The air conditioning circuit will probably use a similar relay. If the relays are the same, you can swap the two to test the fuel pump relay.
If a car shakes when the gas petal is stepped on and it won’t go fast, then you probably have an ignition problem. This is generally a problem caused by a spark plug wire arcing to the engine ground. The other possibility can be a bad spark plug. This is a 1996 pontiac grand am, 2.4 liter engine with a coil pack. This means that there are no spark plug wires but instead an intermediate plug that fits between the plug and the coil. If a car stumbles when the gas petal is stepped on it is because the spark is grounding to the engine instead of reaching the spark plug. Many cars today use timing belts instead of timing chains that were used in the past. Most import automobiles use them and some new domestic autos are switching to them. There are advantages and disadvantages to using timing belts. Timing belts are more quiet than a timing chain. This is good for high performance applications that use knock sensors to detect detonation. The lesser noise minimizes the background noise caused by a timing chain. The downside is that the timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles. A timing chain will generally never need to be replaced. Many times people will wait past 120,000 miles and their belt will break. If the timing belt breaks the car will stop wherever it happens to be. Depending on what type of car you own the timing belt breaking can be very costly.
There are three general types of two cycle induction. The most simple type of air intake induction is called a piston port engine. This type of two stroke engine has holes cut through the cylinder walls in specific areas. The second type of induction, and the most popular type, is reed block induction. This consists of multiple reed petals that allow air into the crankcase and keep it trapped there. The third type of two stroke induction is generally used in rotax two cylinder engines is the rotary valve engine. It does slightly better than reed engine because there is no restriction from reed petals. The rotary valve rotates past the crankcase intake port at a specific time to allow air through then seal the air into the crankcase.
2 Stroke engine repair can be accomplished once the severity of the problem or damage is assesed. As with all engines, they require two basic things to operate. First all engines require fuel. There are a few ways to check if the engine is getting fuel. Remove the spark plug and see if they are wet. If the spark plug is not wet, you can remove the float bowl to see if fuel is being delivered to it. If there is no fuel you can check the needle and seat of the carburetor, or the fuel pump. You can generally repair a sticking needle simply by moving the needle manually. If the 2 stroke engine is fuel injected you will need a fuel pressure gauge and will then need to attach it to the fuel rail. Check that the specified pressure is being reached. If not, the fuel pump is probably faulty. The next important thing to check is that the engine is producing spark.
Does your car idle rough or the speed cycle up and down. You probably have a bad idle air control valve. The only purpose of the idle air control valve is to keep the engine’s idle smooth. The engine’s computer gives the idle air control valve the feedback it needs to hold a constant rpm. The idle will be around 1000 rpm’s when not in gear and around 800 rpm’s in gear. This iac valve is on a Nissan Maxima and is similar to most idle air control valves.
Rebuilding a clutch slave cylinder is sometimes needed after the clutch petal is no longer working. First you should check the clutch fluid container to verify it is full. If not follow the line down to the slave cylinder while looking for leaks to identify the problem. The clutch slave cylinder is located behind the passenger side wheel on this vehicle, a miata. Remove the two bolts and the clutch line and the slave cylinder should come off to the right side.
If you have a lawnmower that is backfiring or pulling the pull start out of your hand, the flywheel key may be sheared. The key in a small engine mates the flywheel to the crankshaft in a certain spot. The flywheel can only fit one way or the timing will be incorrect. The flywheel key can be sheared if a heavy object was hit by the mower, such as a rock. With no key keeping the engine in the right place it will no longer run correctly.
If your clutch petal has ever lost pressure and the petal will not dis-engage the clutch, there is a leak. The leak may be air sucking in or fluid leaking out. First check the clutch fluid reserve, if it is low you will need to identify the leak. There should be a puddle of fluid at the leak. If a leaking line is not the culprit it may be the clutch master cylinder. If the clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder is faulty, there may be no loss of fluid. The clutch master cylinder is located on the firewall attached underneath the fluid reserve tank.
