rebuilt engine-crate engine

Category: Auto Tuning

What happens when you need to have your engine rebuilt? Before deciding on a rebuilt engine you have to decide on ordering a rebuild kit or buying a crate engine. Both situations have benefits and you will have to decide on which way to go. First is you vehicle a daily driver? If so, your down time can be a large hassle. In this case you would probably be better off to go with the crate engine. Crate engine, simply implies the way the engine is shipped to you. A crate engine will be complete and ready to run, many times with a warranty included. Crate engines come in different power levels, especially v-8 engines. They can range from stock 350ci to 502ci monster sized engines. Many import tuners also upgrade to a JDM crate engine, for increased horsepower. (Full Article)

spark plug

Category: Auto Tuning

A spark plug is used in every type of gasoline engine. Many people change their own spark plugs. Spark plugs handle the ignition spark that combusts or ignites the engines fuel and moves the piston. Spark plugs have to endure very high temperatures from combustion. Spark plugs also have to handle the spark erosion from the ignition system. There are many popular brands of spark plugs like champion, ngk, bosch, denso and autolite. Spark plugs can be gapped widely to help burn the mixture in the cylinder, especially if the mixture is lean.

motorcycle exhaust

Category: Motorcycle Repair

Exhausts systems for motorcycles can be very beneficial to the owner. Motorcycle exhaust systems can include the header, collector pipes and the muffler canister. Motorcycle exhaust systems can improve the sound, improve hp and torque, are lighter and many look much better than stock pipes. First is the header which has the duty of directly tuning the engine exhaust pulses. The diameter and length of the header pipes is very critical to keep the speed and volume of the exhaust correct. The headers continue until they reach the collector where multiple pipes will connect into the main tube running into the muffler. The diameter and volume are also critical for best power results. Many different styles of motorcycle exhausts exist for different types of bikes. Inline four cylinder bikes will generally use 4 into 1 (meaning four headers running into one collector pipe) and one muffler.

Motorcycle performance

Category: Motorcycle Repair

Any motorcycle, regardless of motor type, can benefit from some basic bolt on parts. Exhaust pipes are one of the most popular modifications. Whether for sound, looks, being lightweight, or just to gain horsepower, aftermarket exhaust systems have many benefits. Some systems are a full system from the header to the muffler and is more popular on cruisers. Sportbikes generally have well tuned headers and gain more performance from slip on exhaust systems. The factory slip-ons are heavy and have to pass sound tests to be quiet enough. Cruisers will upgrade carburetors and air filters to gain power. Sportbikes usually have tuned airboxes that are best left alone, and usually only upgrade to a k+n or uni style aftermarket air filter that flows more air. The carbs on sportbikes are usually as big as they need to be. Ignition advancers can also be used but generally offer little gains and require 93+ octane to be used always. Many bikes are also changing their gearing to drastically increase their acceleration.

Motorcycle troubleshooting

Category: Motorcycle Repair

When troubleshooting a motorcycle, first start with the basics. These simple tests can work for any small engine. All engines need three basic things to run fuel, spark and air. These simple things can cause your motorbike to not start up or run poorly. First start off with the fuel remove the hose off the tank and make sure the fuel is flowing properly. Some bikes will have to turn the fuel selector to prime, not on, or fuel will not flow. Take a flashlight and look down into the tank, is the fuel varnished or is there dirt in the tank? Older motorbikes had a problem with tanks rusting inside and would plug the screen up inside the tank. Fuel delivery may still be a problem but we will come back to that later. Next remove the spark plugs, you may need to remove the tank to reach them. Inspect every spark plug as you take them out. All the spark plugs should look the same. If a plug looks white colored, that cylinder may be (lean) and not getting enough fuel. If you have a plug that looks wet and black, that cylinder may getting too much fuel (rich) or not sparking good. Remove all the spark plugs and snap the plugs back into their wires. Set the spark plugs on the engine so that they can ground themselves.

CNG, LPG or propane fuel conversions

Category: Hybrid Auto

Many commercial vehicles have converted to CNG (compressed natural gas)and LPG (propane). CNG is similar to propane except that there are not very many places to refuel at. There are many benefits to running either of these fuels instead of regular gasoline. The cost per mileage of propane is cheaper overall than gasoline. Unfortunately the overall range will probably be lessened due to the slightly lower BTU’s or energy within the fuel. Luckily refilling propane is not a big deal and there are refueling stations all over. Also if this conversion is done on a currently carbureted vehicle, the conversion could actually increase the mileage. Regular gasoline needs to be atomized or turned into a fine mist to burn cleanly. Regular carburetors don’t do a very good job of atomizing gasoline. The propane is already in a gaseous form after it un compresses. Propane will mix and burn evenly and very efficiently in the engine. This is why emissions of HC, CO and NOX are drastically reduced.

Car Tune Up

Category: Auto Tuning

A tune up is a simple task that almost anyone can do. This will make your vehicle more fuel efficient. This applies for any motorized vehicle. The filters are a good place to start. Depending how often you do a tune up will affect how much of an improvement that you will see. Most mechanics suggest a tune up by 60,000 miles. The engine air filter can be your first tune up item. The air filter is located over a carburetor on older cars. The air filter is in the airbox on fuel injected motors. The fuel filter can be located anywhere between your engine and the fuel tank and should also be replaced. If the fuel filter is clogged it can make your engine run lean. Many times if your check engine light has been on it is due to the o2 sensor not working correctly. This is normally only replaced when it fails but usually will not last long anyways. Now is also a good time to have your transmission filter replaced. If the transmission filter has alot of miles on it the transmission could be slipping.

sportbike 600 cc inline 4 cylinder power

Category: Motorcycle Repair

Motorcycle engines are the leading engine technology field in a production vehicle. Obviously F1 would be the ultimate leading edge, but you can’t buy that technology off a showroom floor with a warranty either. Today’s 600 cc motorcycles are producing over 100 horsepower. They can also cover a quarter mile in less than 10 seconds, stock! This was something reserved for only 900 cc + bikes from just a few years ago! So then you have to ask how these engines are making so much power?

two stroke carb tuning

Category: Jet Ski

A two stroke engine is not difficult to tune. As with four stroke engine you should first check your carburetors. First let the vehicle warm up and while sitting at idle slowly twist the throttle increasing the rpm’s. Come back to idle and repeat the process a little faster each time. If you are having problems with your carbs it should eventually act up. Sometimes you have to operate it and try the accelerating to put some load on the vehicle. Eventually it should become unresponsive with a slow flat “buuuwwwaaa” sound and then take off. This would be a caused by a lean condition and needs more fuel. If the vehicle stumbles, burbles and stutters when you gas the throttle it is rich and needs less fuel. Always be careful when tuning a two stroke engine to make sure it doesn’t operate in a lean condition or damage can occur to the under lubricated engine. Although this is not the best method for checking carbs, it may help you out. You can check the spark plugs by instantly stopping the motor during the experienced poor running. Remove the spark plugs. First check to see that the plugs look the same on the electrode. If one plug is completely different than the other, check for air leaks or one carburetor not working correctly.
