Saving Gas by Improving Mileage

Category: Auto Tuning

If you can’t get or afford the price of gas and your fuel gauge looks like this often, you might want to try some different ideas to save gas or improve mileage. First always make sure your car is running as good as it can. This can be done by performing a tune up which generally consists of spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, fuel filter, and distributor cap and rotor if applicable. If you have a fuel injected car and the check engine light is on you may have a problem that is costing you a lot of extra fuel. The car will then be running in a “limp” mode which usually consists of using extra fuel for the safety of the engine. Things such as the oxygen sensor (o2) will cause the engine to use extra gas also.

Automotive Fuel Pump Relay

Category: Auto Tuning

fuel pump relay

If your fuel pump is not working there is a possibility that your fuel pump relay is bad. When you turn the ignition key forward the coil inside the relay is energized. When the coil is energized you can generally quietly hear the fuel pump buzzing for a few seconds. The fuel pump will come on before the engine has a chance to start up so that the fuel system will be pre pressurized. If the relay has gone bad the fuel pump will never come on. If you don’t hear the fuel pump turn on, look under the hood, probably inside the fuse panel to locate the relay. The air conditioning circuit will probably use a similar relay. If the relays are the same, you can swap the two to test the fuel pump relay.

Snowmobile Fuel Pump

Category: Snowmobile Engine

Snowmobile fuel pump problems can be diagnosed. A vacuum fuel pump is used on snowmobiles with carburetors. The first thing to look at is the vacuum line that will run to the crankcase. If this hose has any cracks, leaks or is not clamped tightly on to the crankcase fitting, it will not pump fuel. If the fuel pump still wont work, mark where the lines come from and make a line down the side of the pump. Disassemble the pump carefully and look at the diaphragms for cracks. Also inspect for blockage of any of the cavities or passages within the fuel pump. You can also spin the engine over to make sure the crankcase fitting is not blocked. This fitting will produce vacuum and pressure so don’t be alarmed. If you can’t find any problems rebuild or replace the pump. Fuel injected snowmobiles will use an electric fuel pump. First check to see that there is voltage coming to the fuel pump.

Bio-Diesel

Category: Diesel Engine

Bio-diesel is a type of diesel being blended as an alternative fuel. Generally vegetable or animal oils can be used. Many different mixes of bio diesel are used. With no modifications to vehicles some people use up to 20 percent and from 50% to 70% on modified engines. First the bio diesel has to go through a chemical separation process where the glycerin has to “fall out” of it. This is called transesterification and is done with the use of methanol and lye. Neither chemicals are great to work with but it can be safe with pre cautioned use. Generally clean oils are used to avoid the acidic state of used cooking oil. Some people don’t mind the extra work to cleanse used oil, because the oil can be extremely cheap and many times is free. Fast food places use alot of oil and are glad to get rid of it. Water and acid will need to be removed from the used oils. A washing of the fuel will also need to be done to remove excess methanol, soaps and other contaminants.

alternative to gas

Category: Hybrid Auto

An alternative to gasoline as fuel is needed badly. Many technologies exist, but most development has begun so recently, that much more time and money is needed to replace gas. In prior gas shortages people have used one technology not often talked about, called woodgas. Woodgas is a gas that is made by heating wood until it chemically changes into a clean burnable gas and a solid coal. Vehicles can be run off of woodgas as well as very clean burning heaters with no smoke. One downfall with the setup is the need for a “furnace” to “cook” the vapor out of the wood. Placement of the wood inside the furnace is very critical as is the way the air enters and exits the device. The airflow is usually throttled to control the rate of conversion into the gas. Many people used trucks or small trailers for the room to process the wood. Due to the efficient gas, a piece of wood can last for quite awhile longer than a burning piece of wood.

Propane conversion

Category: Hybrid Auto

It is relatively easy to convert a small gasoline engine to propane or natural gas. There are lpg/propane kits designed to make this conversion easy. They generally consist of a simple plate that sits between the carb and the engine. A regulator is usually attached to regulate the propane going to the spacer plate. The regulator is needed to supply more fuel as the load or power demand increases. Instead of the engine bogging down, the regulator supplies more fuel so the engine makes more power. Propane or lpg is already in a gaseous form, which does not have to vaporize and will not leave carbon deposits. Carbon is bad because it is hard and leaves deposits which cause engine wear. Carbon makes your oil black and breaks the oil down faster. Producing less carbon should dramatically increase an engine’s life. Power and fuel consumption are very similar to using gasoline. The power will vary depending on what engine it is being used on. Mileage will be similar, but could be better than a stock carburetted engine. Propane tanks are usually safe and are very resistant to impact. The tanks will vent if the internal pressure gets too high, for safety. Many people like to convert generators to natural gas/ propane. They use the same source as their home’s fuel source for heat. When the power goes out, they have a limitless supply of fuel without having to refill a generator tank up with gas cans. Conversion kits can be reasonably priced and bought online.
