Toyota performance

Category: Cool Cars

Toyota has had many performance vehicles. It has had the celica, mr2 and supra. All these vehicles had astounding performance, but targeted different uses. The celica is a car that still continues today. It is a front wheel drive car that makes close to 200 horsepower in it’s sportiest configuration. At one time the celica was a contender in off road rally racing. It was a all wheel drive vehicle with a turbo to help the power output.

Unfortunately it was a little heavier than it’s competition the suberau impreza wrx sti and the Mitsubishi evolution. The mr2 or mister two as they are called is a pure sports car. It uses a mid engine layout and is sometimes used as a kitcar chassis in place of a fiero. The mr2 became a supercar in the early 1990′s as it had a Ferrari aggressive look about it. The horsepower also dramatically increased as the alternate turbo model made 200 horsepower and could easily make more power. Some people today have made 600 horsepower out of these machines, although no easy task. The mr2 weight is only around 2400 lbs and moves quite well even with a reasonable amount of power. The mr2 chassis is incredible and is loved at autocrosses as is the Mazda miata for they’re incredible handling. The mr2 spyder is still currently being made today and still is a fun car. The bad boy of the Toyota camp is certainly the supra. The last version of the supra sold into the mid 1990′s. The supra was a front engine rear wheel drive vehicle. The engine was an inline 6 cylinder that was twin turbo and made 320 horsepower stock! This car can make insane amounts of horsepower, over 1000 hp! Some have referred to it as the modern day grand national. They both have tremendous ability to make a lot of power with few mods. The supra handles very well and would lay down quarter mile times in the low 13 second range. This beat even the domestic cars such as mustangs and corvettes of that time making an impression on everyone in drag racing circuits. Toyota continues to show it’s performance potential as it does well in f1 racing circuits against a tough competitor, Ferrari. It is also in multiple other forms of open wheel racing. Toyota has also been included in nascar truck racing and has done quite well for the short time it has been there. Toyota has also built a following on it technology in the very usable and driver friendly prius. While other hybrid cars lag behind in being usable and actually achieving the mileage they claim, Toyota does it very well. All of this learning makes a very reliable car and continues to improve the technology that they can provide to the customer.
